What will I study?

The Business Environment

In this unit you will learn about the different types of business, their ownership and purpose, how businesses are organised and the external factors influencing business activity.

 

Business Resources

In this unit you will learn the human, physical, technological and financial resources required in running a business, how they are managed effectively and why this is important.


Introduction to Marketing

In this unit you will learn about the role of the marketing function, with particular emphasis on the role of marketing research and how it contributes to marketing planning and the development of a marketing mix for a target group of customers.


Creative Product Promotion

In this unit you will gain knowledge and understanding of the promotional process and the importance of the choice of promotional methods. You will learn about the promotional mix, the role of advertising agencies and the media as well as gaining the skills to enable you to create a simple promotional campaign of your own.


Business Communication

In this unit you will have the opportunity to develop, analyse and evaluate a range of methods used to communicate different types of business information and will understand the purpose of such communication. You will also produce and evaluate different types of business communication of your own.


Developing Teams in Business

In this unit you will experience working as part of a team and as a leader in a given situation. This will help you to prepare for work and to understand the skills and attributes needed both for cohesive teams and effective leaders. You will build confidence in your own ability as a team member and, as a leader, recognise the weakness and strengths of others and how team members can be supported.


Business Accounting

Accounting records are frequently used in business decision making; understanding their purpose and uses is a useful skill in business management. This unit will enable you to identify the need for accounting and be able to create and use some of the most common financial accounts and their related documents. You will also be able to review business performance through the use of simple ratio analysis. 



Financial Accounting

This unit will help you to understand the format and purpose of financial statements that are used in business. You will also gain an understanding of the legislative and regulatory framework within which financial statements are produced, and you will be able to appropriately adjust financial statements for business.


Management Accounting

The techniques of costing, statistical analysis, break-even and budgeting are amongst the most important techniques that a manager will use to make better decisions in the business environment. This unit will enable you to interpret the type of financial data that managers might be given in the day to day running of a business, and understand how to make business decisions based on the information given. 


Human Resource Management in Business

In this unit you will gain an understanding of the factors that are taken into account by organisations when planning their human resource management and how organisations gain employee motivation and employee commitment. You will learn about how employee performance is measured and managed as well as the benefits of doing so.

 

Recruitment and Selection in Business

This unit is about how an organisation recruits and selects staff. You will gain knowledge and understanding of the process that a business has to go through when recruiting staff. You will prepare documents necessary to help select the right person for the job and plan to take part in a selection interview. You will develop a broad understanding of the legislation surrounding recruitment and selection and be able to explain how these laws affect a business.


Development Planning for a Career in Business

The unit will help you to make effective career decisions. Career management skills are particularly important as labour market conditions change and they help you to have a competitive edge against those who are unclear of their career path or of labour market conditions. Employability skills are of relevance to any qualification and the opportunity to demonstrate these skills is of value in preparation for employment.
